The rock in the cave of Lourdes is touched by millions of people who leave behind fingerprints of their dreams, expectations, hopes and suffering. In Lourdes, all the weaknesses and poverty gather. The Holy Place is a refuge for the pilgrims who expose themselves, literally – in the baths in which they submerge themselves naked – and figuratively – in the direct, almost physical relationship with the Virgin Mary. The filmmakers approached the pilgrims: nursing staff, the sick, gypsies, soldiers and prostitutes. They listened to their mumbled prayers and listened to their life stories, which were shaped by the strokes of fate. Beyond faith, in Lourdes they captured the great anthropological spectacle in which shattering fates meet.
